Bayview

Bayview (officially known as Bayview-Hunters Point and unofficially as The Bayview) is home to the legendary Candlestick Park – home of the San Francisco 49’ers NFL football team. Historically, the area was home to the now decommissioned Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and was primarily an unused marshland until urbanization efforts began in the 20th Century. Although during the 1960s and 1970s the neighborhood fell into a period of decay, today it is a bustling neighborhood with an assortment of shopping and recreational activities.

Where it’s At

Bayview is located in the city’s southeastern corner, following along Third Street from India Basin to Candlestick Point. To the west it is bordered by US Highway 101 and, to the south, Bayview Hill. Its southern most point includes the Candlestick Point State Recreation Area.

What to See

If you happen to be in San Francisco during the fall, taking in a 49’ers football game is a quintessential San Francisco experience. Bayview is the home of the legendary Candlestick Park – once home to the San Francisco Giants baseball team and now the home to the city’s professional football team. It was also the location of the Beatles final concert, back on August 29, 1966.

Another site not to be missed is the Quesada Garden, situated at the center of the Bayview neighborhood. Not only is it the home to a wide assortment of unique plants and flowers, but also has numerous large-scale murals created by various neighborhood artists.

Where to Eat

Although one could argue this is an attraction in itself, the Speakeasy Brewery is a place to both see and drink. Located at 1195 Evans Street, the microbrewery offers tours and beer tastings, along with live music events on the last Friday of every month. Founded in 1997 as a craft beer brewery, the ‘prohibition era’ taproom serves up such flavors as Big Daddy IPA, Prohibition Ale and Extra Pale Ale. Visitors are also treated to exclusive releases only available at the brewery. Note that tours run Tuesday through Sunday. Not to miss is a visit to the Brewhouse Bar, an out-of-the-barrel experience only open on Fridays from 4 – 9 pm.
